I just picked up a 650 Seca. Sticker says manufactured 9/81.

Does this make it a 1982 model?

I see that there are XJ650, XJ650R, XJ650L??????????????? How do I know which 650 mine is? I can't seem to find a data plate on the engine or anything. I'm wanting to restore it, but just need to get the basics figured out first so I can submit the parts price list to my wife (Financial committee) for approval. Thanks for the help and I am REALLY looking forward to learning and riding this bike. I've read lots of good things about it online already!!!

9/81 manufacture date could very well be '82 model, post your full serial number or do a search for "vin decoding" on the forums. "R" is for Seca. The second letter is the model year designator; for instance an '81 would be an XJ650RH, '82 an XJ650RJ, etc. Unless it's Canadian then there's a "C" in there somewhere, I believe. You should be able to find the full vin on the steering head, and an "abbreviated" version (model-serial) on the top of the motor/transmission housing. On the 550's it's on the right, not 100% sure on the 650s. Welcome aboard! Be sure to add yourself to the map, and create a signature with your bike info and general location; it helps when trying to answer your questions.

    My VIN is: JYA5V200 3 CA002094

The number stamped on the right side of the engine is: 5V2- 002094

I'm not sure if I'm reading the chart right but would this be a:

    1982 XJ650RJ??
