    Hello everybody,

I'm new here and happy to join the Yamaha-lovers.
I've just bought an XJ900 '83 (31A) this afternoon. It is in a terrible state now, but I'm hoping to get it restored to its former glory.
For the moment I'm a bit confused, since all the pictures I can find on the net, have a square headlight whereas I have a round one. I have found an owner manual and there I can see the difference between the 900F (with square light and three gauges (speedo, tacho, fuel) and the 900 (round light and two gauges (speedo and tacho). Now, my bike has a round light and speedo, tacho and fuel gauges.
Any information about the bike would be appreciated a lot.

PS: sorry for any mistakes in my English, but it's not my first language

Welcome. Your best investment would be a good manual. Then take an inventory of what you need to get done and study this forum. A lot of good information is posted here.

    Mic-Hell,

Your english is as good as some of the "native speakers" on this site. I recommend that you invest $10.00 US (8 euros) in the XJ CD's that are available. They are available at www.xjcd.org. They include scanned parts manuals, service manuals, owner manuals, and a database of cross referenced parts that are interchangeable among different XJ bikes. Welcome to the forum. There's a lot of extremely knowledgeable people here. I'm not one of them, but I'm not afraid to ask questions.

Bill and Artie thanks for your advice.

@Artie: do you happen to know if the (English) manual for my bike is on the CD? I have a German version of the Haynes manual, but my German is kind of rusty (just like a lot of my bike  )

I don't know for sure whether the 900 is on the XJCD or not, it MIGHT be as the 900 was sold here in the States ONE YEAR (1983.) Apparently very popular in Australia as well, quite a spirited discussion on the XJ900 can be found here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14139.html And welcome, keep us posted as to your progress.

Thank you for the info Bigfitz52 and Artie(RT).
Judging from the frame code and the year it was built, my bike is the 853cc.
I just had a quick look on this site (http://www.dropbears.com/m/models/yamaha/modelcodes.htm) and I thinks it's the XJ 900 RL - 83 - 31A. So I think the CDs will come in handy.
