    Hello All
I have an XJ550 (1982) Maxim, this morning I rode my bike up the hill to meet my cousin to go off on our rides, while waiting my bike stalled and it will not start, no clicking noise, the headlight does not come on, however the signal lights do and the horn as well?

First check the battery, then the fuss (do a continuity test, just looking at the fuses won't find a break near the fus caps, or in the fuse clips).
The headlight isn't supposed to come on until the engine starts, so no problem there.

Can it be bump-started (should be easy since you are at the top of a hill)?

make sure the starter button is grounded the connector is under the tank near the coils right side.
does the oil light come on when you press the starter button? This will tell you if starter button is grounded.
have you tried jumping across the solenoid terminals (large nuts).
ignition fusse is different fuse than signals.
your side stand switch my be stuck
pull the side stand relay it is under seat above fender. does it click when you turn the key on?

did you put bike in neutral, clutch safety switch my be bad?
does the neutral light come on?

Did you accidentally hit the OFF switch? Wouldn't be the first time that happened......

Could be the kickstand switch, too.......put the kickstand up, and reach down and see if the plunger can pull out a bit farther

Many thanks to you all for responding with out you XJ professionals I am not sure what i would do. :)
I haven't tried bump-starting it yet as work has kept me busy, however i did check the kickstand plunger which cannot be pulled out any further, to no avail.
I am not sure on how to go about performing a "continuity" test?
Now the following came to mind yesterday, prior to leaving to go to my cousins house the ignition key was getting stuck so I inserted WD40 into the ignition and sprayed some fluid in there, and shortly thereafter the issue occurred, is there a possibility that i short circuited the switch and if so, will the extent of the damage be just limited to the switch?
