    Hi
I am rebuilding a 82 xj 650 RJ maxim, fitted new pattern indicators the other month and after a few crossed wires I had full working indicators.....but the other day the left hand side indicators had decided to stop working, I have tested:
    the bulbs - check
    Fuse - check
    Relay - No voltmeter reading

I am going to replace the relay switch and see if that makes any difference, If any one can tell me why one side is out and not the other I would be greatful, and also I had a look at the relay switch and pulled it from its metal cap[which is dented] wondered would that make a difference, what is this cap called?

If anyone could help I would be thankful

    Daz

Does one bulb on the side light but not the other? If a ground is loose it will do that - one light on - no blink - other side works fine...

"fitted new pattern indicators" if you mean aftermarket Yamaha look-alikes, chances are they came with bulbs JUST SLIGHTLY less wattage than necessary to blink. I had that issue and only had to swap one per side back to the original 27W bulbs.

    also check your switch.

    my bike won't blink left.

but if I go right, then left, they work.

dirty contacts in switch I have yet to fix because I found a way out of it lol

I had a similar problem with mine. The ground to each lamp wasn't reliable so I built a little ground harness that I ran from each light to the negative terminal of the battery. Should have been enough to go to a good groun point but I was pretty sick of t-shooting so I went right to the source(or return if you will). I cleaned and cleaned and clea....... the turn signal switch at the handlebar and it would work for a little while and then crap out. The final fix came after I took the handlebar switch assembly off the bike and watche things work until it failed. The contact on the flexure assembly was not aligned so that the contacts touched squarely across the whole face of the contact. I bent the flexure base(the doohickey that holds the flexure) so that the entire contact face on the flexure contact and the contact face on the fixed contact were perfectly aligned, entire contact surface to entire contact surface and perfectly flat alignment and they have never missed a beat since
    .

When I was having signal problems I was commuting a little over 25 miles each way with a "learners permit" endorsement which restricted my riding time to 'hours of non-darkness' only. Did I mention I worked from 10:30 pm to 7:30 am so my commute was during hours of darkness both directions. I think I sweat a million bullets but it sure motivated me to get it fixed!

Good luck. This can be frustrating.

    Hi Bill

The right side only flashes fast, and nothing from the left side, I will try and clean the switch tonight and see if that helps, I will also look at the wattage on the bulbs to see if they are the right ones,

Just so you know, when I bought it in the UK it didn't come with indicators.

    Thanks for your help

FYI, on stock XJ's, the supply wiring (+12V), cancelling unit (if fitted), and flasher are shared between left and right sides. It's the switch that routes the flashing 12V to one pair or the other of lamps.

If your system is set up like stock, then it would be either the switch, or the wiring from the switch to the lamps that is the problem.

    Cheers,
    Paul
