hey there ladies and gents! i've just recently joined the world of motorcycling and bought myself an 82 maxim xj650! it's an absolute dream come true!

alas, as life goes, there are drawbacks...

i bought it relatively cheap, knowing it would need to be worked on. it's my first bike, as i mentioned, so i don't know a whole lot about this sort of thing. when i release the clutch and pull back on the throttle, the rpms increase whereas the bike just seems to accelerate at its own pace. very slowly, might i add. and whenever i have the need to head up a hill, i need to keep the rpms high in first gear (7k at ten mph) just to make it up.

what shall i check first and foremost? any help would be greatly appreciated!

check the clutch cable first you need adjust it so it returns more On my 85 there are 2 12mm nuts near the clutch housing that you loosen and adjust. you want to bring the cable end closer to the housing I believe adjust it down 1/4 of an inch or so and test it out see if it is better or worse and re-adjust.

no need to be embarrassed thats what the site is for. Glad to hear it was just an adjustment and you are good to go beats having to take things apart and buy parts. it took me multiple tries at adjusting the cable to get the smoothest shift out of the bike so don't be afraid to tinker a bit if it isn't really smooth.

yeah, one of the reasons i wanted to get this particular bike was because i found this forum while reading reviews on it! everyone here seemed so helpful with every aspect of the motorcycle that i knew all i had to do was ask and someone out there would be bound to respond! it's been a wonderful welcome into the world of motorcycling!
