    :D
It has been a while since I could work on my 85 Maxim 700.
When I got the bike home I couldnt get it to turn over, replaced the starter solenoid and solved that problem.
However I have the following problems that are probably all related.
    1. I have the bike in neutral, turn the key on and the oil pressure light comes on. The neutral light doesnt come on, and yes the bulb is good.
    2. If I put the bike in gear the oil light goes out, but if I press the start button the bike wont turn over but the oil light comes on. And goes out when I release the starter button.
    3. The coils, test out okay on the primary side. I will check the secondary tomorrow when I take the caps off the wires. The pick up coil tests out okay.
    4. There is no spark, but there is 12 V or so, going to the coils.
    5. I have the Yamaha manual for the bike but the pics are atrocious, can you tell me where the Neutral switch is for the transmission. Could that be a problem?
    6. Only way that I can get the bike to turn over is neutral, hold the clutch in and have side stand up. Is there other combos or non combos.

I havent started to work on the fuel portion and the tank is rusted on the inside and am working on that problem separately. Maybe a new used tank would be easier and cheaper.
But lets get the electricals first.

so the bike does turn over if you follow step 6 above - so you'd need two people, one to do step 6, and one to actually check for spark, i guess unless you tie the clutch lever with rope. If you're getting the 12V to the coil you should be getting spark, there's no adjustments or anything you can do to a coil to not put out V on the secondary side. having said that, maybe you don't have spark on that one wire you tested. Let us know that much before I keep typing :)

I can check for spark, I use another sparkplug. And the tank and seat are off. I only checked using #4 plug wire. Like I said I will check the boots in the morning.

12v at the coils needs to shut off and on. if it don't do that. then the voltage won't collapse in the secondary and create your spark.

Referring to #1 first of all its a oil level sensor it sounds like someone has crossed some wires. It might be that they had a problem getting her cranked, like you said you changed the starter solenoid to get it to work for you . They may have been cleaning wire connections in the connectors and plugged them back into the wrong holes. As far as spark If the voltage drops on the battery enough the bike will turn over but will not send voltage to the coils so make sure the battery has a full charge on it before you make yourself crazy looking for problems that aren't there. Its supposed to be like this.
    1. key on kill switch on trans in neutral neutral light is on- starter will engage and engine will run, side stand can be out or in does not matter.
    2. key on kill switch on trans in gear neutral light is out - starter will only engage if clutch is pulled in does not matter if side stand is out or in.
