As the post states, i have no spark. When cranking it, i have the kickstand up with the plunger circuit fully out, bike is in neutral, neutral light on, new battery. I havent done any diagnosis yet, i was hoping someone could give me a good starting point. All the fuses are intact.

Although the Fuses are good, ... the Fuse Panel might not be.

Use a Test Light and see if there is +12V on both ends of the IGN Fuse.

    Un-Plug the Black Box.
    Clean the Contact Terminals.

    Un-Plug the Safety Circuit Relay.
You might have a stuck switch.

PM me with your email address and I'll send you the cable routing diagrams for your bike, which includes the locations of all the various relays.

The safety relay is located under the gas tank, below and to the rear of the coils. There are two relays there (the other is the flasher relay) the safety relay should be the forward-most of the two. You can double-check its identity by using chacal's relay guide: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=27543.html

Unplugging the safety relay temporarily will bypass all of the safety circuit. If you still have no fire with it unplugged, the problem is elsewhere.

    Fusebox.

    Weak battery.

    Old plugs.

    Problem with the OFF/RUN/OFF switch.

    Wiring or connections anywhere.

Go to RadioShack® and get yourself one of these and a 9Volt Battery.

Strip, Twist and Solder the ends.
Use this Tool to TEST your Relays.
When you connect the RED and BLACK to the Terminals for the Coil you should HEAR and FEEL the Relay Closing.

Thats a good idea rick - i think i will try that. I am gonna pull the kickstand relay and the ignition cut as illuatrated in the above link, just to get those out of the question.

Of course make sure your battery is FULLY charged. XJ's don't like weakish batteries when cranking.

Battery is new and fully charged. I have questionable continuity across the ignition fuse. Stopped at radio shack last night so i will be replacing the whole thing tonight. However when i was checking for 12V on both sides of all the fuses, i did hear relays clicking. Sometimes they would, sometimes not. So i guess i have an intermittent connection issue. hopefully fuse box replacement will fix that. I do have a question - with the key in run, shouldnt i hear the sidestand relay click when i push the plunger switch in and out? Same with the clutch?

Not with the Bike in Neutral.
In Neutral, ... the Safety Relay is already Closed to allow the Bike to start.

In Gear, ... the Relay takes signals from the Safety related switches and Opens preventing the Bike from starting.

You won't regret installing that new Fuse Box.

Anyone who has an Original Fuse Box is running on borrowed time.
