hey, finally got my rebuilt xj650 turing over, but no spark on any plug. Resistence is good on the coil wires, but couldnt get a reading on the plug wires. Have a back up set also and same thing. I dont think all four coils are junk, and I tested the amp/votlage on the clip that leads to the coils while starting and had no reading. My diodes measure ok. My question is if I should just assume its the tci and get a new one. Wires running correct as well. Also, any way to test the tci? thanks, Lou

Check to see that you are getting at least 12V to the coils (I forgot what color the wire is though). You should also be able to acheive continuity between the two plug leads on a coil. If you can't get continuity (or a measureable resistance) your plugs aren't going to fire. Try checking the plug leads without the boots (they screw off) and see if you can get a measureable resistance. I would hate to buy a new TCI and still not be able to get spark.

I had the same problem with mine last year. Coils checked out, all seemed fine. Then as my last resort bought new plugs and a new battery. One turn and she fired up.

The power that feeds the coils is the same power that feeds the TCI. If you're not measuring voltage for the coils, as stated, then you're probably not getting voltage to the TCI. You need to find out why that is. Check the fuse, check for voltage on both sides of the fuse and trace it all the way to the coils and TCI. It sounds more like a wiring problem (like something has come unplugged or didn't get plugged back together) than component failure.

Not really. It's a process of elimination. If you eliminate all other possibilities the only thing left is the TCI so therefore it must be bad.
