My bike died on me about 5 miles from home, and I needed a tow home.
I had good battery, and starter turned over good, and was full of fuel. But I had no spark. I did the standard test with #1 plug out of the engine and laid it on the fins. When I turned over the bike, just no spark at all. What are my choices here of things to replace? I took out the coil connected to #1 plug, and suspect it might be that, but no one around here could test it for me at the auto stores--with no work for 5 mos. I hate to just buy another, unless that is really the problem. Could it be solenoid too? How do you test for this problem of no spark? I have a 1985 XJ700N
I have to go out of town for 2 days, for I have to move again, (it will take multiple trips) but I will check back Sat. night, to see if anyone can give me info. I DO appreciate this website with my XJ bike, even though I sometimes wonder about the bike ITSELF, with all it's problems.
So if anyone out there has some advice about this new problem, I'm all ears.
I have to get my bike running to move it 100 miles from here. Greg

I can tell you that it won't be the solenoid if the engine is turning when you press the starter button.
I wouldn't start to replace anything until you've checked that all the connectors are good and clean and tight.
That's all i can tell you for now, then if no joy start the testing procedure.
Oh and make sure the battery is good and charged, the XJ likes a good battery to spark.
