I may have jumped in a little too soon on buying this 82 for 330.00 quid.
I does not look like getting a title is going to be easy from Missouri. Has anyone had success using title companies that cost less than 395.00. Thats more than i paid for the bike! Lesson learned i guess.
    thanks
    Jeff

in the state of utah. we send a registered letter to the last registered address. if it comes back after 30 days. it goes to the DMV. and they reissue the title to new ownership. or they can do the paperwork for you. i think it cost $6.

Maybe part it out and get another one that needs fixing up?

I dont know about your state, but here in PA, it is about 99% waste of time trying to get a title for something that it was lost for. Best of luck to you though.

Don't immediately assume the worst, or assume you need a title company.

Get on the state's website, and figure out exactly what you need to do. It is completely different from state to state.

look up how to claim it as abandoned. Some states that's an easy process. Others not so much.

    +1.

Sometimes state web sites can be lacking. If you don't find what you're looking for go to your DMV and ask.

Sounds like it's outside of the US with the "330.00 quid." purchase price.

I haven't heard that term since "The Full Monty". You can print off the forms from Maine's DMV site, have a law enforcement officer sign off on the inspection, then register it in Maine, then you'll get a title.

Great advice Fitz! In Washington State you pay the fees and register it like you have the title. Drive or ride it like you own it. Do this 2 years in a row and if no one reports it stolen to the State they will issue you a title!

If you are going to do this it's a good idea to have a detailed Bill of Sale from the guy you got the bike from! Kind of nice to be able to pass on the blame should the titled Yahoo file a claim of ownership!

    Sweet!

    here in ct:
    A) for a bike that old you dont need a title, just a bill of sale
    B) if you did need a title, loss of title paperwork/processing takes nothing more than time (few weeks) and an extra $25 on top of what you would normally pay at dmv to register.

i just went through it with my new truck, PAINLESS.

good info guys. here in PA, they wont just re-issue a title. You can however try and get a custom bike title for it, but even then you need a reciept and bill of sale for EVERYTHING including the nuts and washers. I tried this route it was fricken misserable, but after 16 months i finally got a Custom build title. this was on an old sportster.

Harley's are hard to deal with because they were the #1 stolen vehicle for years. If you buy an old Harley and there's stolen parts on it, some states will confiscate those parts or the whole bike.

Massachusetts is probably the toughest or close to the top on Motorcycle Title's.

You cannot get a set of Plates for a Bike unless you bring-in the Title.
    There's no way around that.

I haven't read all of what has been said. Just don't have the time. I will give my two cents though.

It varies by state to state and possibly even more local than that.

From what I have seen in the past, there are two approaches to take:
First, a court ordered title. You apply to your applicable local court, county here in Ohio, and from there the last titled owner is identified and contacted if possible. If that person cannot be contacted and you have a bill of sale, court is likely to assign you title. I am sure there are a few more steps, but that is the nutshell version.

    Second: salvage title.
In this situation, you get the bike through a some sort of seller who has official standing: a bike shop, say, who states that it was an abandoned repair or some such. Another option would be from a bike salvage outfit. With their bill of sale in hand, any bills for services, and your receipts for new and used parts you have installed to bring the vehicle to complete/working condition in Ohio, you then go to the highway patrol for
an inspection of road worthiness and VIN check, and assuming that all checks out, you are then issued a rebuild or salvage title.

Now, the easiest of these two is obviously the answer, and here is where maybe a friend network can help. If you know someone who can get some shop to provide paperwork to that effect ... your way is easily paved. I would highly recommend checking to verify that the VIN is not on any hot sheets before doing all of this.

walk in to your local police station with the VIN written down and ask. They should be able to check. Or your MVA, DMV whatever.
