I have just gotten my bike running pretty constantly. The only problem is i have to really rev the engine to get started in first gear. From a stop I have to really give it some gas to get going.... compared to my father's honda shadow 1100 or my little brothers crotch rocket. well even my little 250 rebel seems to have more low end torque than my 650 xj(probably just the weight tho). Is this consistent with what you guys have to do to get started?

"Really rev", is a rather arbitrary term. I'd say you might check to see that you dont have any brakes dragging and that you are indeed in 1st gear.... start downshifting in 5th and be sure all gears are present and accounted for.
Then, if all that is ok then we will need to look at possible engine troubles.

"really rev" = i have to be, atleast 3000ish rpm or I will stall. yes all five gears are there. It will pick up the front tire if I run it up to about 7000 and dump the clutch. It just seems a little weak like something is either wrong with the powerband or it could be my clutch is catching funny. OR it could be normal and all in my head.

Find a friend that has ridden for a long time and have them take it for a spin. Should eliminate any "head" concerns.
