A couple of weeks ago I posted about a , what I called a bearing noise comming from my xj750 that whent away when the cluch was pulled in. Before I started to investigate the cluch I had a bit more of a think and this noise, is more like a gear noise like a warn car diff exept a bit higher pitched. also this noise is affected by transmission speed rather than motor revs. When the bike is on the service stand and run in gear the noise is not there, it only seem to be there when the transmisson is under laod ether accelerating, driving or enghine braking. So I am thinking it might be the backlash in the middle gear ( the pinion gear that drives the drive shaft. Anybody had this problem and can give any advice I have a manual and can get the dial gadge and stuff to check this. I wonder how long can I leave it before it causes damage ?

Start with the easy stuff, like the clutch throwout "wafer" bearing.

i changed the shims in mine the last time i had the engine out. don't remember the numbers but it had a thicker shim than a spare i had so i put the thinner one in.
the book isn't real clear on exactly where to measure the play and on a small diameter, a small change is a lot. the original shim definitely had play, no shim was tight and the thin shim had enough to feel, so that's what i used. don't know if it's by the book but it's better than it was

Good advise about the easy stuff, next time I change the oil I will check out the clutch and start there first
