I've been referred here by the yamaha-triples forum. I started out this year with my 1980 XS850 and have loved riding it every day since July.

After nosing around about Yamahas, I got interested in glomming onto one of the 1100 models, and I wanted a basket case. Lo and behold, the Nashville Craigslist did provide, and now I am the proud owner of said 1982 XJ1100.

First impressions are that it sits low (yay!) and has about the weirdest cluster and handlebars I've ever seen. It has had a rough life. It cranks, but doesn't fire. I got it from a REALLY nice guy who was into Harleys, but after fiddling with this for his son, decided to just go on and find him a Harley. He said the ignition box is out on this Maxim, whatever that means. Guess I'll find out! Happy y'all are here, I'll be popping in asking questions throughout the winter as I get the XJ back to snuff.
    thanks,

    Welcome!

The XJ1100 is a pretty fast bike for its age. Maybe not quite as fast as some XS1100 models, but it will smoke the Nice Guy's Harley any day

The CDI box on the XJ1100 is a weird one, and kinda hard to find... I'm not sure whether any later year XS CDI's can be retrofitted or not, but I'd check to make sure it's not something else, first.

BTW there's a CDI for it on fleabay right now for $200...

Good luck! That bike is definitely worth the effort.

Since it shares a bit more mechanically with the xs1100, i would also check out www.xs11.com if you haven't found it yet. they helped me get my xj1100 running just by searching old posts. also if you don't have a repair manual : spend the money on the xjcd. very much worth it.

Good to hear from another XJ1100 owner. These bikes are getting hard to find, get yours together and running and save a bike. Find a good service book and get started, the XJ cd has alot of good infomation in it.
    Good luck
It's true the XJ's are not guite as fast as the XS1100, I think there was a change in the cam specs for the XJ

If I am not mistaken, there is a post on the forum on how to repair the CDI (ignition box you refer to). I think I would give it a try and save some money for other things. I was reading about it and seemed pretty simple. You might find that you need it  .
