Ok - 1.5 months later - finally recieved my 82 maxim 750XJ back from the dealership. Bought it real cheap early aug without being able to test drive etc...

End results. Had dealership do a total tune up fix it all kind of thing -almost $1000 worth. got it back 3 weeks ago - not running smooth at all.

Lower than 3K RPM - seems like only 3 cylinders firing etc, every time you start off etc. As soon as you hit 40 KPH or 20 MPH - rides like a dream. As the engine got hotter - it has engine run on, first 2- 5 seconds but by the time riding 20 mins, it was running high RPM for more than 30 seconds.

Dropped it off again & complained hard about the issues that $1000 is supposed to leave this thing running "well".. they went back to work on it.

Got it back, with maybe a 20% improvement in the above conditons. Mechanic claims the issue is an air leak around the blot going side to side across motor under the carbs by about 2 - 3" giving an air leak directly into the valves. Claims total engine rebuild is the only answer. ( & then what will he find inside the engine?? He is guessing $900- 1600 job)

I might add at this point I am not anywhere near mechanically inclined - nor interested in these matters.

    My Q is:

    1. Is the mechanic talking through his head and is totally lost in his assessment?
    2. Is there any other items I can confer with him to eliminate other potential easier to fix items that might cause these issues?

NOPE!!! Hes not talking out his head........ it's at the other end of things.

HEY! you dont think he was using those same brains when he tried to fix your bike? (brains at the other end where he's talking from)

I really cant tell you exactly what is wrong with your bike for sure, but I can tell you there is a list of possibilities.
Things from float adjustment, mixture screw settings, jets in the wrong places, plugged carb passages.......... the list goes on.

I'd find a new mechanic! Someone who is a straight shooter!

You'd be much better off working these issues out on your own. Believe me there is a wealth of knowledge on this very website.

Yes, you'll put in a few hours of your own time but in the end you'll have a great running bike and you'll be confident in the knowledge that you are capable of making all of the basic adjustments/services that are required to keep your bike running great.

The carbs are one of the biggest problem areas but the good thing is that they are serviceable by the average person with a modest amount of patience and perserverance. The other things that are important are the valve/cam adjustments. Hang in here and let us help you through it... its
really not that difficult if you have a few tools and are willing to spend some time. At. least you will know that it is done right.

I need to know EXACTLY what the Mechanic said.

If you have to call him and write it down ... do that. I need to know precisely what the diagnosis IS. Not something like. The real deal.

Please write it down and Post it word for word.
    We'll take it from there.
