I feel like I've been struck stupid! These carbs are killing me. In a previous post just over a week ago, it was suggested that I re-do the bench sync, reset the initial mixture, and then tune the carbs by ear to correct a fast idle problem.

I did the sync with the 3x5 card strips and set the mixture to 2 3/4 turns. put the carbs back on, and now it won't start. It seems like it wants to catch as soon as I press the start button, but doesn't - it then just spins.

I checked spark on #4 and it's good. I did not check the other three - assuming they're ok. There is gas in the bowls too.

Obviously the problem is something I did with the carbs, but I don't understand what I could have done to stop it from starting.

Any suggestions? At this point I can't decide if I should keep going, take it to a shop, find someone local that knows these bikes, or sell it! I don't think it should be this difficult!

Try turning all of the idle mixture screws out a half to full turn - what was the setting when you took the carbs off?

How clean is your enrichment circuit? Is your battery charged. You can have enough juice to spin the starter, or fire the ignition, but not both.

Check for spark on ALL plugs, and see if they have gas going to the cylinders.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. The carbs can be such a pain!!! I am sure that someone with a lot more knoweldge than myelf will be along soon, but i will give you my 0.02.

So the last 2 times i put my carbs back on my bike, i could not get the thing to fire. On the first occasion, i installed the choke cable incorrectly, and the enrichment plunger were not opening when the choke was applied. So i would first make sure that you got spark to all 4, and then check that tose plungers come up when the choke is applied.

Also another thought off the top is to try to put the idle adjustment screw in just a smidge. The butterflies have to open just slightly after the synch, and if your Idle adjustment screw if fully backed out, you may not be getting fuel in there to ignite.

Just 2 thoughts, and like i said i am no expert, but lord knows I have been in my carbs more than once...

Also don't give up you will get it, with the help of all the guys on this forum, and there is no better feeling than figuring out the problem and seeing the results in a sweetly tuned bike!!! Good luck and let us know.

What do you have your petcock set to?
Will she fire when held at half throttle while turning over?
Have you screwed the idle adjustment in a few turns and tried again?
