so got my carbs back today put them on to no surprise the bike didn't fire but with a little help i got them to.. and after a while a weird squealing started coming from the carbs dose anyone have any idea what that can be??? its a 85 xj 700 with mikuni xj 750 carbs i am getting really frustrated with this. i have pods on the carbs and open exhaust if that helps for anyone to explain the weird squealing...

    thank you everyone

If you could, might be an idea to get it running right with a factory setup then change one thing at a time to make sure it keeps running properly.

Then you know where the issue is as you swap stuff over.

I have heard a squealing noise from my carbs when the choke is on. Its more like a high pitch whistle though. Look to see if those pod filters are blocking any of the air passages in the end of the carbs.

Is it an air-cooled Maxim 700 or liquid-cooled Maxim X?

Air-cooled should have Hitachi carbs. Mikuni were fitted on the Maxim X... I don't know how much of a difference it would make, but you're a long way from stock if you've got Mikuni's on an airhead.

Does it whistle when you slam the gas, or mostly when you let go? Sounds like the engine wants air and it is playing the flute to get it in the engine (Butterfly is closer to closed than open, for proper idle rpm)

Make sure the slides move easily, I would spray a blast of wd-40 into each carb and try to loosen anything binding...one of the slides could be stuck in a down position and that would choke air causing a whistle as well.

Pods and open exhaust have NOTHING to do with it, so don't worry on that front. It should run just fine, but it would need to be bench balanced at least to get close to running tune. I used a sewing needle to get the butterflies even on the bench tune and sure enough it was almost spot on upon firing it up. Keep info coming and you will get it figured out soon enough, there are enough people that can fix stuff here, just don't get lost in the comments of the people that talk about fixing stuff, lmao!! im not even getting it to fire rite now because of it it turns over but then its like the starter slips and it makes the cherping sound while i am turning her over... its sucking air in somewhere but where HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLP

It needs to be running to check for a vacuum leak. You can take some carb cleaner, or some guys use propane (I think it's propane... someone will correct me if I'm wrong :D ) and spray around the suspect area while the bike is running. First make sure all your manifold bolts are tight. Visually inspect your manifold boots to look for cracks or splits. You will need to make sure the butterflies are at least bench-synced or you can spend hours trying to figure out wtf is wrong...
I know it's a pain pulling the carbs on and off, but 'm gonna bet that by the time you're done you be able to get 'em off and on in lest than 10 min :D (been there.. done that! lol)

Use a can of Ether (starting fluid) and a red tube from a carb cleaner can for precision work locating the vac leak.

Did you recently do an oil change?? I only ask because you complain about your starter clutch, and if you put in some "energy conserving" car oil.

To make your bike quiet so you can listen better for this leak - - wrap a couple old bath towels (dripping wet) around your mufflers, hanging off the ends.

with no luck i tried all the tricks you guys have told me and i still cant find the leak it almost sounds like it coming from inside the carb like its trying to get air but really cant i might have to take my carb's off again and bench sync them... what could it be inside a carb???

I know this is way out from left field and stupid to even ask but are the carb hats tight? diaphrams set in the grooves good?

did you replace all of the vacuum tube caps on the carb-to-manifold boots? other than the one that has the vacuum tube to the petcock)

i worked on my bike for a little bit today finally got the clutch set but it still dies when i put it in gear, grrrrr i am guessing that when i chopped my wires up i failed to tie the wires together on the neutral switch.
can anyone tell me if that would cause this??? that the bike would just die as soon as i put it in gear

you just had your carbs rebuilt. pull the hats and the bowls
off and make sure all the jets are in place and in the correct
    location.
in the future you may want to do them yourself.
    hope this helps.

You chopped your wires up? If it is dying when you put it in gear it could be that you didn't by-pass your side stand safety switch correctly.

Dude! This could have been fixed long ago if you had come clean!

If you want help solving problems LIST EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE TO THE BIKE INCLUDING THE LAST THING(S) YOU DID BEFORE IT BROKE!!!!!

This was a post on another forum I frequent that sums it up well:

"Because so much of the finer details get left out in posts ... Running s**t fuel, Have a Remus exhaust, fiddled with this and f***ed with that get left out of posts, one somewhat has to read between the lines"
