    Hey folks,

My bike has the 2nd gear jumping around problem. It doesn't pop out of 2nd gear but it is beginning to hop around a fair bet. I replaced the 2nd gear earlier this spring (the gear with the dogs on it) but the gear with the slots on it that the dogs slide into (I think this is the 5th gear) look good so I left it alone. Well something was not good because it was fine for a while and has started acting up again.

I haven't cracked anything open yet and I am hoping that if I replace the gear with the slots my problem will go away (I have one of these). However, if it doesn't I have a 1980 xs1100 that I was hoping to fix up, get running and sell. If I need the gears out of here I could take them. Does anyone know for sure if the gears out of a 1980 xs1100 will fit/match the gears in a 1983 xj1100.

    Thanks.

    Dave...

There is a detailed do it yourself Dremel fix on the XS.com site that works well. My bike has the same problem but with first gear popping out. I will be doing the fix over the winter.

The gears in all the XS/XJ1100 are the same. If you are going to replace or fix 2nd gear be sure to replace/fix the matching drive dog. You won't have much sucess by fixing only half the problem. The mating teeth on these gear sets become beveled causing the slipping problem. They need to be repaired as a set. The dremell fix works great providing your gears are not torn up to bad. If yours is just starting to slip them there is a good chance your gears will be perfect for the dremell fix.
The gear shaft can be removed with the engine in the bike, no need to split the case. Look on XS11.com there is a detailed repair procedure with pictures.
I have done both my XS and XJ 1100 like this and they work. Take your time to get the gear teeth to match and you'll not have any more problems.

Does anyone have the link for the 2nd gear dremel fix off the xs site. I used to have it but seem to have misplaced it.

    Thanks.
