Oil capacity for 81 xj550

    That's what the little "2200CM3" on the case right by the filler hole is. It means 2200CC's, your oil capacity.

    You'll want to add another ~200CC to get the proper level. So that's 2400CC, 2.4L or slightly more than 2.5 qts.

    Check the oil level with the bike on the centerstand, and after the motor has been off for at least 10 minutes. The level should be all the way up the sight glass, with just a bubble showing at the top.

    That little bubble is your insurance policy against a stuck float/petcock malfunction filling the crankcase with gas. If you check one day and the bubble is suddenly GONE, investigate.

    Be sure you use motorcycle oil, not car oil.
