Ok, so before I purchased my 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim I did take a look at about 3 Honda Nighthawks 82, 83's etc. (Being a former Honda fan). I read up on them before hand and took them for rides and was impressed except for the whole battery recharging system problem inherent with the Nighthawk (but thats a whole new subject). What I did notice about the Nighthawks and what quite a few websites gave them kudos for was the oil coolers mounted right in front under the handle bars on the frame. Alot of what I read was that the Nighthawks lasted almost forever because of this little device. Looks like a little radiator with the oil lines going into it. Now, is there any aftermarket oil cooler that would mount onto a Yamaha XJ650? I have heard and read that this little oil cooler seriously increases the life expectancy of a motorcycle engine (heat being the enemy of the engine) Also, has anybody ever tryed to mount an engine oil cooler from a Honda Nighthawk onto a Yamaha XJ? It was the first thing I thought about when I first looked at my 1982 Yamaha Maxim and took it out for a ride. "Wow, wish it had that little oil cooler like the Nighthawk on here!" Like to hear some opinions or info on this subject. Thanks!

You simply keep an eye on "the bay" until one pops up, or doesn't Chacal sell a kit?? The one from the 750 Seca or 650 Turbo is a bolt-on.

Being an old lube man, I'm not fond of oil filters i close proximity to the pipes, like Yamaha likes to do. I think that a remote oil filter kit could easily be plumbed with an oil cooler attached may kill two birds with one stone. I too would like to see one, with an oil tank with an anti back-flow valve just to increase my oil capacity. I'll be keeping an eye on this string too.

I bought this little cooler on eBay 3" X 7-1/4" X 1-1/4". I have no clue how to hook it up to the engine either, but I'm gonna find out. Heck it might not even work, but at least I tryed. It is brand new but doesnt come with any lines or anything, but I'm sure I can find something. Well, I did find out that they do in fact sell an oil cooler made specifically for the Yamaha XJ650 Maxim, a bit pricey for me though, Item number: 150407428716. The one I bought was $19.95/6.50 shipping. Here it is: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s40/ ... ler001.jpg
If anybody wants to take the time to tell this not so mechanically incline but willing to learn guy where to hook up the hoses that would be great!

There is an kit available from our parts guru Chacal. You might want to touch bases with him before you throw loads of money to someone else.

I know this is an older thread, but the answer is a Seca Turbo oil cooler will fit onto the Maxim. About 9 years ago I did it to my 1981 650LH Midnight Maxim. I remember getting new steel braided lines made, they were a bit too long but still worked. I don't remember why I had them made in the first place, originals must have been too short or maybe even missing from the EBAY sale. I paid less than $50 on EBAY plus the new hoses were around $25. I made a bracket holding it in place, holes with threads are already in the frame. You can see the unit in the Haynes manual, page 141.

I'm changing the oil on her shortly, I'll take a pic or two and post.

The 650 seca got the oil cooler stock , I think everywhere except the US.. I guess the reasoning that US didn't get it was due to the 55 mph speed limit at the time, it is one of the features that made me want the seca for myself
