    Does my 82 XJ1100J have an oil filter. If so where? I can not find it.

    Sorry I am new to motorcycles and this is my first bike. just got it 3 weeks ago and want to go over everything. I am sure that it needs an oil change and want to do it myself.

    Thanks

    Hey Nickr...yes, it does! It's inside the big finned round cast housing on the bottom front of the engine, centerline, just above the oil drain bolt. The cover is held onto the engine by a hex-head bolt through the center of it, and that bolt also contains the oil filter bypass valve assembly.

    When doing an oil filter change, you may also want to replace the cover-to-block o-ring, and at least the o-ring on the bypass valve, and perhaps the entire bypass valve/bolt itself if the head is buggered up.

    I carry a full line of oil system parts for your bike, just write my via a PM and I'll be glad to quote prices, etc.

    Hey, batter batter batter, SWING!

    --------------

    Original Yamaha Oil Filtration System Parts:

    NOTE: on paper oil filter elements, the "flat" face of the filter element faces TOWARDS the engine, and the "concave" face of the filter element goes towards the filter housing cover. Sitting within both openings of the oil filter element are the HCP281 grommets. On the "concave" side of the filter, then comes the HCP1493 flat washer, followed by the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression spring, and finally then the outer cover.

    m7) OEM Paper Element Oil Filters, original Yamaha supplier. Does NOT include the HCP281 filter grommets or any of the o-rings.

    HCP697 OEM Yamaha Oil Filter Element fits XJ1100:
    $ 7.50

    n7) Aftermarket FRAM Paper Element Oil Filters. Include the HCP281 filter grommets, housing o-ring, and bypass bolt o-ring.

    HCP1651 FRAM Paper Oil Filter Element fits XJ1100:
    $ 7.95

    COMMENTARY: many people have read reviews or seen comments to the effect that "Fram oil filters are junk, etc.". While this claim may or may not be true in regards to their automotive line of can filters, this may not apply to their motorcylce line of filters (which I've used for years on my bikes). There is really nothing in the world that could be simpler than a motorcylce filter for these Yamaha's. If it is a concern to you, then of course order an OEM filter or the K&N filter, they're all so cheap that it hardly makes an economic difference one way or the other, but just thought you'd like to know!

    p7) Aftermarket K&N Performance Gold Synthetic Element Oil Filters. Includes the HCP281 filter element grommets, but no housing or bypass bolt o-rings.

    HCP1653 K&N Paper Oil Filter Element fits XJ1100:
    $ 7.95

    q20b) OEM Yamaha oil filter element PLATE WASHER, use 1 per filter, used only on the "concave" face of the filter element. This washer serves as a "seat" for the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression springs listed below.

    HCP1493 OEM oil filter element Plate Washer/Spring Seat, fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900/1100 models, each:
    $ 1.50

    q21b) OEM Yamaha oil filter element COMPRESSION SPRING, use 1 per filter, not a bad idea to replace these every once in a while (perhaps after every 5th oil change).

    HCP1495 OEM oil filter element Compression Spring, fits XJ1100 models, each:
    $ 2.50

    r7) OEM O-RING for oil filter housing-to-block.....the big round one on the filter housing and on the adapter plate (for factory oil-cooler equipped models). Correct sized oil- and heat-resistant ring perfectly replaces the original. Not a bad idea to replace these once a year.........

    HCP282 OEM oil filter housing O-Ring, for XJ1100 models:
    $ 6.25

    dd) OEM and aftermarket Oil Filter Pressure By-pass Valve/Cover Mounting BOLT .....the bolt that holds the oil filter cover housing to the block (for standard AND factory oil-cooler equipped models). OEM and aftermarket reproduction versions of this machined steel bolt and oil pressure by-pass assembly correctly replace the original bolt. Comes with the o-ring. Aftermarket version has a much larger 17mm hex head rather than the small factory 12mm hex head---so you won't strip it off as easily as is the case with a frozen stock bolt. Not a bad idea to replace these once in a while.........

    PLEASE!: always use anti-seize compound on the threads when installing this bolt!

    HCP1067 OEM Oil Filter Pressure By-pass Valve & Cover Mounting Bolt, bright finish, fits all 1100 models. Each:
    $ 27.95

    cc) O-RING for oil filter by-pass valve/cover mounting bolt.....fits the bolt that holds the oil filter housing to the block (for standard AND factory oil-cooler equipped models). Correct sized oil- and heat-resistant o-ring perfectly replaces the original. Not a bad idea to replace these once a year.........

    HCP1498 OEM oil filter bolt O-Ring, fits all XJ1100 models, each:
    $ 2.00

    ff) OEM and aftermarket Oil Filler and Drain Ports Plug/Bolt.

    PLEASE!: always use anti-seize compound on the threads when installing any of these bolts!

    NOTE and commentary: I highly recommend the use of the magnetic style drain plugs in both the crankcase oil pan and the final drive drain holes. It's an added measure of safety to trap metallic particles and keep them from circulating suspended in the oil.

    The various magnetic drain plugs listed below have the following characteristics that should be considered when deciding on which one to purchase:

    HCP1656 aftermarket plug---has the strongest magnetic pull of them all, but has the smallest hex head size of the bunch (14mm). Use anti-seize on the threads before installing, and do not over-torque it (31 ft-lbs is the factory spec for use as an engine oil drain plug, and 16 ft-lb as a final drive drain) and this should not be a problem.

    HCP1472 oem magnetic plug----magnetic pull is "okay", but not anywhere as strong as the HCP1656 plug above. However, this drain plug does have a 9mm extended "probe" or tip which is the magnetized part, and thus it would extended further into the oil flow than any of the other drain plugs listed. This plug has a large 17mm hex head.

    HCP1654 aftermarket plug---very weak magnetic pull. Has an extra-large 19mm head.

    HCP1477 oem non-mag plug---obviously, no magnetic pull at all. On the plus side, it has the large 17mm head, and it's the least expensive of the bunch.

    HCP1477 OEM Oil Drain Plug/Bolt, 17mm head. This bolt is NOT magnetic. Crush washer HCP1475 must be ordered separate.
    Fits all:
    550/650/700/750/900/1100 all models oil pan drain port.
    650/700/750/900 all models final drive FILLER port.
    650 except 1983 650 Turbo/700/750/900/1100 all models final drive DRAIN port.
    1100 middle gear drive drain port.
    Each: $ 4.50

    HCP1472 OEM Oil Drain Plug/Bolt, 17mm head. This bolt IS magnetic, and has a central, removable "binding screw" through the center of the head (used for installation of a temperature probe at the dealership). 9mm extended magnetic tip probe helps catch metal particles in the oil. Crush washer HCP1475 must be ordered separate. Although I have no way of measuring the magnetic field, it appears that the magnetic pull of this drain plug is quite a bit weaker than of the HCP1656 aftermarket magnetic drain plug listed below.
    Fits all:
    550/650/700/750/900/1100 all models oil pan drain port.
    650/700/750/900 all models final drive FILLER port.
    650 except 1983 650 Turbo/700/750/900/1100 all models final drive DRAIN port.
    1100 middle gear drive drain port.
    Each: $ 17.50

    HCP6186 OEM Oil Drain Plug/Bolt. This bolt is NOT magnetic. Crush washer HCP1475 must be ordered separate . Fits:
    1983 650 Turbo final drive DRAIN port.
    Each: $ 15.00

    HCP6161 OEM Oil Filler Plug/Bolt. Crush washer HCP1475 must be ordered separate . Fits:
    1100 final drive FILLER port.
    Each: $ 6.00

    HCP4962 OEM Oil Filler Plug/Bolt CAP, used with the HCP6161 bolt above. Fits:
    1100 final drive FILLER port.
    Each: $ 15.00

    HCP5119 OEM middle gear Oil Drain Plug/Bolt. This bolt is NOT magnetic. Crush washer HCP5120 must be ordered separate. NOTE: although Yamaha recommends draining the oil from the middle gear drive area during each oil change, we STRONGLY recommend against doing so. This drain bolt is extremely hard to get at while the exhaust is on the bike, and it is rather fragile and easy to shear off when attempting to loosen. It is really intended to be used as a drain port when the engine is out of the bike, before splitting the cases. The middle gear area that this port provides access to only holds about a half-cup of oil, and that oil will be "changed" via mixing with the fresh oil added to the crankcase during an oil change. Fits all:
    650/700/750/900 all models middle gear drive drain port.
    Each: $ 5.00

    NOTE: 1100 models use the HCP1477 bolt for the middle gear drain area, see above.

    HCP1654 Replacement Oil Drain Plug/Bolt, large 19mm head. This bolt IS magnetic. It comes with the crush washer. Bright cad plated.
    Fits all:
    550/650/700/750/900/1100 all models oil pan drain port.
    650/700/750/900 all models final drive FILLER port.
    650 except 1983 650 Turbo/700/750/900/1100 all models final drive DRAIN port.
    1100 middle gear drive drain port.
    Each: $ 13.95

    HCP1656 Replacement MAGNETIC Oil Drain Plug/Bolt, small 14mm head. This bolt IS magnetic and helps to catch all the junk floating around in your oil, which is a really great idea. It comes with the crush washer. Although I have no way of measuring the absolute magnetic strength of any of these bolts, the magnetic pull of this drain plug is quite a bit stronger than either the HCP1472 or HCP1654 magnetic drain plugs.
    Fits all:
    550/650/700/750/900/1100 all models oil pan drain port.
    650/700/750/900 all models final drive FILLER port.
    650 except 1983 650 Turbo/700/750/900/1100 all models final drive DRAIN port.
    1100 middle gear drive drain port.
    Each:
    $ 13.95

    dp3) OEM drain plug Crush Washer----should be replaced every time you change your oil!

    HCP1475 oil pan drain, final drive filler, and final drive drain bolt Crush Washer, fits all 550/650/700/750/900/1100 models; also is used for 1100 (only) middle gear drain bolt. Each:
    $ 1.00

    ------------

    That should be enough to get you started. ;)

    Overwhelming? I didn't even mention the oil level sensors... plus, it's HIS price list, not mine.

    As for simplicity... you likely won't have to replace the drain plugs or anything like that; just the filter, o-rings, and maybe the crush washer on the drain plug. I just figured I'd list *everything* that had to do with the oil filter.

    Just to be complete, you understand.

    I didn’t mean to make that sound unappreciative. I bought this motorcycle for two reasons. The first obviously Is to ride and the second is to learn. You guys are great on theses forums helping out beginners like me understand and find the right parts.

    Sincerely Thank you
