I'm glad I found this form. I just purchased an '81 Seca XJ 750 for $250. It needs a little work but it runs. I am no mechanic by any means so your advise is greatly appreciated.

I drained the oil and when screwing the oil filter housing back on it stopped with about a quarter of an inch left to go. It's also crooked as it goes in. I looked inside and it looks like some threads broke off on the inside. It was screwing in just fine with no problems at all until it got to this point then it gets too tight. I didn't muscle it in there so I'm not sure how it happened but it did. Can this be re tapped or will I need to get that part of the motor replaced?

you should be able to chase the threads with the proper tap.
there is a top and bottom side of the oil filter housing indicated by a larger fin on top .
you would have been better off posting this in the technical chat forum

Thanks for the tip. I haven't added it yet but I bought Amsoil 20w40 full synthetic. 20w40 is what was on the manual. I also ordered a shop manual but it won't be in until September.

Thanks again. I read that synthetics were good for older bikes and Amsoil was the only co that makes the 20w40 that I could find.

I was looking at the bottle and it says JASO MA-API SM. Do you still recommend me getting another one on that list? I'll attach pics of the label.

If it is JASO MA rated then you are good to go. That must be a recent development for Amsoil.
