Been working on a long forgotten 750 midnight maxim that is ready for a test start but this is the first bike that I have worked on (and hope to ride!) and I have no idea what oil to use. I have looked online and on here and have found all kinds of answers. The general consensus is to use a motorcycle grade 10x50 or 20w50 with no additives as its a wet clutch. Looking for the right oil, not something that "will work". A brand name would be a great help!

Check the link in my sig line. Or not.... give me a min to re-link

    EDIT:

That thread must not have migrated yet, so here's the skinny.

Look for an oil that has a JASO MA certification, or that claims to meet JASO MA specifications. I like Valvoline's motorcycle specific 10W-50, but usually run Shell Rotella T Triple Protection because it has more ZDDP (an additive package that reduces wear in shim adjusted valve trains) than the Valvoline.

    EDIT 2:
Here is the new link. I'll update my sig line later. http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/index...orrect-oil-for-a-wet-clutch-motorcycle.43702/

    NO 10W anything.

Start with Castrol 4T 20W50 (motorcycle oil) until you get the bike running right. Then you can screw around with 15W diesel oil or whatever you want. But until the bike is properly resurrected don't introduce any variables. You have enough work to do. Yamaha specified 20W40 but it is nearly impossible to find; 20W50 motorcycle oil is fine. NOT synthetic.

Oh, and the FRAM pn CH6003 comes with both o-rings and is widely available. As is the WIX/NAPA equivalent. I'm running the NAPA PS4934 simply because the store is 2 blocks away.
