    hey -

my maxim needs oil, and i don't know much about what to get.
i saw another 550 maxim owner in the forum was suggested SAE 20W/40 a few days ago. i've poked around a bit on the internet and see a lot about synthetics - 5w-40 and 10w-40.

any thoughts? i don't know what the previous owner used and this will be the first time i've ever changed the oil, on any bike.

i want to get a new air filter soon also - what kind do i need and where could i get it?

Be sure and get motorcycle oil! Auto oil has additives that can make your clutch slip.

My manual calls for a 20W-40 in the summer. My local shop tried to sell me 20W-50. This is a heavier oil, and will rob you of power and gas mileage. I am personally going to go with Amsoil 10W-40 all year around (texas is hot!).

I am no oil expert, but apparently, I can't spell, AND, a 10W-40 is a better fit than a 20W-50. Don't ask me why. Check out the Amsoil website, and do some google searches on oil weights - lots of stuff out there.

From what I have found, 10W-40 is GENERALLY for inline 4s, and 20W-50 is generally for V-twins. I guess because of the lower rpms.

I picked up the 20W-40 Yamalube while I was picking up my oil filter and jet needle. Just call me Mr. Conventional...
