My '82 XJ550 starter started acting sluggish so I pulled it off to discover it was full of burnt oil. Last I had it apart (20,000 miles ago) it was fine. Did a search here and found that a few others have had this problem and the going theory was that the seals on the starter housing were leaking a bit and that allowed the engine to "breath" out through the starter and fill it with oil.

Anyone solved this problem or is this now a periodic maintenance item?
