Pretty self explanatory. I believe the bolt has been over-torqued at some point and now I have a leak at the filter housing (possible distortion of sealing surface?). Can I just apply some black RTV gasket material to the housing and reseat?

When you say seal, do you mean the O Ring that sits in the filter housing seal groove?

Yeh, rubber 'O' ring, 2 if you have an oil cooler.

There is a really large o-ring for the housing itself; and a much smaller one on the filter bolt.

They both should be replaced. I doubt RTV is going to help (or hold up.)

If you think that the mating surface on the filter housing has been "distorted" it can be "dressed" against a sheet of fine wet sandpaper on a flat surface (like a pane of glass.) Use 400~600~800 grit and light oil, like WD40.

Also, ensure that one of the tabs or fins on the housing hasn't "run into" one of the fins on the motor preventing the housing from tightening down squarely.

Thanks for the info guys. Its leaking a lot of oil now, as in my oil light came on the other day. I recently purchased a new filter and have changed the oil at least 3 times by now since I purchased, so I'm a bit hesitant to do it again until I know what my sizes will be. I bought my filter from a bike shop and it came with no O-rings, go figure. I believe it was the Yamaha brand filter. I know I have the larger O ring that I could take as reference in purchasing a new one, but I don't believe the smaller one is there. I'd like to just go to the hardware store and purchase them, if possible. So does anyone know the O-ring size for both of those?

Just go to Wal-Mart and buy a new Fram with the "O" rings.

Well considering my filter is brand new, I'd rather just get O-rings, but if I can't get any other information what model Fram filter am I looking for?

Dude-this aint no time to skimp. Your oil leak can be a safety concern for you as well as your motor. Go to Wal-Mart, get a Fram CH6003 filter, it will have both o-rings in there. Be careful when you re-install the filter housing, the large o-ring can slip out of its groove as you tighten it. The filter Im sure is maybe around $6-$8, very small price to pay for the protection. Good luck.

And that's a real cheap fix if all that's wrong is the completely missing o-ring.

    I'd sure start there personally.

    Buy a FRAM Oil Filter.
They INCLUDE a FREE pair of O-rings.

The Large one for the Dome.
The Small on for the Bolt.

    Oil BOTH O-rings.
Put Anti-Seize Compound on the first 22mm of the Bolt.
Torque it to 11FtLbs. (Eleven Foot-pounds)

PO had the filter positioned incorrectly on the bolt assembly, it was between the engine body and filter. When I changed the filter last time I just mirrored what they had done, not really thinking about it. New Fram filter CH6003 was $5 with gaskets, though the small one was still working so I didn't use it. Checked the diagram and it set it straight for me, though I definitely dont have the washers. Thanks guys.

If the FILTER has METAL Enclosures you can run without the Big Washer.

The Washer keep the Spring from collapsing the Fiber-built Filter element.
