Noticed a drop of oil under my 82 XJ 650 which has not run in months, has the valve cover off awaiting a valve set, carb rebuild, etc.

The weather has been getting warmer here in PA so perhaps that and the lack of the valve cover is contributing but I'd like to see if it's something easily fixed/identified.

There is some oil on the left side exhaust pipe. It doesn't go up too high - maybe to the top of the oil pan on one side but no higher - only on one side and not from the heads, cylinders, other covers, etc.

Looking underneath (on center stand) it looks like it's from the oil level gauge - could be the oil pan but I don't think so.

Is this a common spot for a leak and if so what would be the best way to address it?
More parts from XJ4Ever is not a problem :)

If it is the oil pan can it be re-gasketed without removing the engine (just remove the exhaust)?

Sorry the pictures are a little grainy - I can take others as needed.

    Any assistance appreciated! IMG_5422.JPG IMG_5418.JPG IMG_5420.JPG

Going to try to replace the oil level sensor gasket/o-ring and see how that works!

Just a heads up that I had a similar leak and it appeared to be coming from the oil level sensor, but it turned out to actually be from a cracked oring in the starter motor. Might be worth checking that also

I just found an oil leak on my 82' XJ650 but it stemmed from valve cover. Don't look to me for assistance but the one thing that really helped was spending most of the evening Sunday cleaning and scrubbing all the old oil off from everywhere. Squeaky clean -- not BigFitz clean but it was acceptable for most humans.

My valve cover was among the first things to come off, clearly leaking along the front left corner.

The oil leak under the engine looks to be a combination of at least the oil level sensor and maybe the shift side engine cover. I'm replacing the oil level o-ring, inner baffle & side cover gaskets and shift lever oil seal. I'll also replace the crank case cover after clearance of the valves is complete, may replace the neutral sensor crush washer and will replace the oil drain crush washer.

It's actually a good time to replace the oil pan gasket now that I have the exhaust off but I don't really see any leaking there so that is a maybe, not required...

An added benefit from a thorough cleaning...you won't come home from a ride smelling like oil, just sweat!!!

Side note -- I'm in Philly and I know a local guy who knows Maxim bikes really well. PM me if you wanna ride or get some info.
