Oil leak through the oil level sensor itself?

    Hi everyone,
I have an 81 XJ550 Seca I have a quick question about the oil level sensor. While I see there is lots of discussion about this topic, I can't see a definitive solution to my problem.

My problem is a leak through the oil level sensor itself, not the o ring as I have replaced the o ring with one from the local Yamaha dealer and the leak is still there. Is this right, does the sensor itself leak or am I missing something? Also, would anyone happen to have the Yamaha OEM part number for the o ring on the oil level sensor? The local dealer couldn't find a part number so they gave me one from the workshop which looked to be identical in size however I'd much prefer to use the actual o ring specific to to the part. I do have two spare oil level sensors to try if need be.

    Thanks in advance!

The sensor can leak if the body has cracked.
Start a conversation with Chacal for the parts you need. Your dealer will have to order them in, but Chacal has them in stock.

If all else fails take your chances find a used sensor on eBay ...but get correct "O" ring from xj4ever (chacal)

Hi guys, I'm keen to get this sorted out and get some quality riding in on this bike before the end of summer here in New Zealand. Yes, we are upside down so our seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere. I contacted Chacal and he was very helpful however I can't really wait too long for the o ring as I want to ride the bike. Today I went to a local bearing manufacturer who also sell seals and o rings. They were able to give me an exact replacement for the o ring which was great. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able scrutinize both of the used oil level sensors I have and install the best one. Fingers crossed that this will be the end of my oil level sensor woes.

    Cheers!
