    Looks like a simple fix.

    Remove Oil Filter Dome.
Remove Oil Filter Bolt from Dome.
    Replace Bolt & Dome O-rings.

Drain oil, replace oil, it wont stay in when you take the oil filter cover off

Thanks rick and hogfiddles that's what I like to hear! Just had a look at the schematic on CMSNL should I order all the seals/springs etc or would it just be the seal that's failed (would the spring be compressed and worn?)

    http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xj900rk-198 ... ml#results

(obviously ill also be getting a new oil filter and oil)

The spring is inside and just holds the filter tight....that won't cause the leak.......

In the old days (about 30 yrs ago ) when I first bought my xj650 the filters used to come with both the bolt and dome O ring included. Apparently thats no longer the case. ( in Australia at least ) Any I,ve bought from a dealer or on ebay seem to not include them. If they are treated right they will last several oil changes, but not forever. I always lightly smear mine with silicone grease before reassembly , Cheers, Murray

The OEM arrangement of the Oil Filter consisted of a SPRING which applied pressure to an Over-sized FLAT WASHER which applied pressure to a WIDE area on the Filter.

Long ago, ... Filters were ALL Cardboard where Later Filters have stamped Metal ends.

The Spring added pressure to the washer which prevented the Spring from causing the Filter to collapse.

    The Washers often disappeared ...

Because they stuck to the Cardboard Filter and got thrown-out be mistake.
