Just be sure that's actually the source. A camchain tensioner gasket leak will eventually run down the back of the block and go behind that cover too. Spillage from the airbox drain will dump there too so an overfill on a 550 can make you think you have a leak behind that cover; pull it and look.

If it IS the output shaft seal, see the thread TIME just mentioned.

morning fitz, my termonology is ameture just for the record. what ill do is post a picture. now i have semi cleaned the oil/gunk out of the area.

the round seal right behind the front sprocket had come lose before and leaked a bunch of oil. my buddy just put it back in and it seemed ok, but then i let a friend take it down the road, and when he came back, there was smoke billowing. when it came back, i looked, and i have to guess that this seal must be where the oil is comming from. also when you look at the picture, below the seal there is the shifter mount. could it be comming from there? there was a bunch of grease/oil laying below the shifter mount, but i just figured it came from above where the seal for the bearings are. lemme know.

that bearing looks abit on the "dry" side, or else the grease is not showing
up very well in the photo. an over heated bearing can smoke before locking up. and that oil seal looks pretty bad as well.

not saying thats the leak, and i hope not just pointing out the obvious.

fitz will correct me if i'm off base.

    good luck

That oil seal looks like toast; it definitely needs to be replaced.

The gook that accumulates below the shift shaft is usually just chain lube and dirt; if the oil seal on the output shaft was leaking (and from looking at it I don't know how it could have NOT been!) then you can add that to the mix.
