Hi everyone, I just aquired my first XJ :D ... an '82 750 Maxim US import (I'm in the UK). I need to know what colour the wires are coming out of the loom to the oil warning light. Can anyone help please? Also, how do I tell which model it is - J/RJ/RH?
    Thanks. John.

Check out http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html To find out more about the serial number (This includes model number).

You can find this thread and more like it at xjbikes.com > forums > xjbikes marketplace > xj4ever supporting vendor

I would suggest taking a look through some of theses threads/guides they can be really helpful if you take the time (I know its a lot of info, you just gotta be patient).

As for the wire question I have no idea.

    Howdy Jay,
If your bike is an 82, it should be an RJ. Are you looking for the wire colour of the sensor or the indicator?
The sensor has a blue wire, the indicator I'm not sure of.

    Robert, he has a Maxim. R=Seca. So if it's a Max, it's just a "J."

Not to be anal, he asked and we try to be accurate...

Thanks, I already established the model number from the EXTENSIVE write-up by Chacal - who is truly the 'XJ wizard'
the wire I'm looking for is from the loom/harness to the oil warning light on the instruments/dash. mine came with mini speedo and instruments and a round headlamp unit (?) - which is where the perpetrator has stuffed all of the conectors and cables out of sight, but not left me an oil light... I need an oil pressure failure warning!!! 8O why do that???

It's actually an oil LEVEL (too low) indicator, nothing to do with pressure.

And Welcome !! (brake check !)

Actually, it's a bit tricker than it seems.

Although the wiring manuals state that it is a blue wire, what you actually find is the following:

    Oil Level Sensor:

    Location:
    - in the oil pan, secured by two hex-headed bolts.

    Identification:
    - a round cylinder with a single lead wire coming off the bottom of the sensor housing. The cylinder fits into a round hole in the bottom of the oil pan.

    Harness connector wire colors:
    * Black wire with a red tracer stripe. NOTE: factory wire diagrams show the main harness wire attaching directly to the sensor---but this is not quite correct. The Black wire with the red tracer stripe is on the main harness, and it attaches (via a bullet connector) to a 40" long (varies by model) "extension wire" of the same color that then runs to the oil level sensor itself. This extension wire is bundled within the pick-up coils harness. The short wire lead coming off the sensor itself may be a variety of colors, but it's usually black.

Wow... thanks a lot, I guess that sorts it out then. I'm amazed! I wasn't accustomed to this level of knowledge and info at the 'GPZ-Zone' (no-one answered most of the time)
So its still a lamp, but comes on at low oil level.
