Just changed the oil first time since acquiring the bike, and it was pretty nasty. With a filter change, I put 2.65 liters of oil back in engine (per manual instruction), but I cannot check the level because the sight glass is dirty. Does that sound like the right amount? Is there a way to clean the sight glass short of disassembly?

Not sure what model you have, but the quantity is in the right ballpark. As far as the sightglass you'll need to remove the clutch cover and clean it on the inside. I used a glass stove top cleaner and it worked well. Just be sure to get all of the residue off as it's a bit gritty.
