today I started my bike and it already has an idol problem until you ride it for about 10 minutes. anyways i was riding in 3rd gear down my street and all of the sudden the bike just started dying like i hit the kill switch. so i pulled over and when i finally got it started it would just idol but when you gave it gas it made a popping noise but wouldn't rev an higher than idol. it seemed as if only 2 of the 4 pistons were firing or something. so after giving up on it i decided to just put it into first and ride it at idol speed home since i was just down the street. well after about 3 minutes of that all of the sudden it just started to run like normal so i hauled ass home and haven't touched it since. so in the end something was causing it to barely run then all the sudden it switched back????? what could it be, i suspect float sticking or electrical issues. but i am a newbie so any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

btw i am replacing the petcock and rebuilding the carbs starting as soon as i get off work tomorrow, just wanted so ideas or if anyone has had this same scenario happen to them? Thanks again and sorry for writing so much. I just want to ride!!! its a 1981 xj650 midnight maxim.

Another thing that can happen is you're running out of fuel and need to be on RES. It can look like there is a lot of gasoline when in reality you're down to the last half gallon or so.

Might be inappropriate arcing with your spark plug leads due to age and heat.
