would that be more cost effective than buying a new set of 4 into 1 pipes and where could i find the right pipe if i did.

If you can find a 4-into-1 collector, you'd be in luck. The tubing wouldn't be hard to find to make the rest of the system out of and get it bent, but the collector might be a trick to find.
You might want to see if an old car header (one from a V-8) would work for a 4-into-1 collector, but I'm not sure of the pipe diameter? PD

Hey, there ya go. That is an excellent piece to start with. Sealing the 4 pipes into the collector might be a trick, but a wire feed welder might work if the material is thick enough.

It looks like the 4 pipe "knuckle" will be at least 3 inches around and you will lose alot of ground clearance. Think "speed bump" - - my 4 into 1 is all dented up.

A flatter collector will still flow well and help clear the filter and drain bolt. 2 into 1 twice. It would be easier to weld from scratch.
It will sound different if you add a cross-over pipe.

    Blackjack,
When you get started on your exhaust project, post some photos so we can see what it all involves. Some of us like to make our own "stuff" and it sounds like a fun project! I always thought about fabricating an exhaust system for a bike, but haven't needed to just yet. A tubing bender would have to be involved and I would need to get one of those first. Keep us posted. PD

I'm gonna be making my own, it'll probably be a month before i get started on it though. 4 into 4, straight down one side.

    Kevineleven,
Do you plan to have 4 mufflers too? It would look wild , 4 into 4 would really be different but in a good way.

well as far as pipe bending goes all you n eed is a torch a metal bench with two pieces of rigid rod tack welded to the table, then you can really get custom on the bends be sure to be patient though so you dont crimp the pipe, but yeah just go wild. im leaving in 3 months to the marines and i dumped my bike yesterday so i dont know when ill start the project now. now i have to fix a broken crankcase cover.

and 4 into 4 sounds wicked but what are you going to do stack up the mufflers on one another?

You could just use four of those shorty mufflers I have on mine. They wouldn't take up very much room. All four outlets together or two on each side of the bike would look tough.

Kevin runs raw exhaust--he don't need no stinkin' mufflers !

If you make 'em longer, they'll be a bit quieter, with a lower tone, but the'll still have a wicked rip to 'em.

NO MUFFLERS? I can't see running with nothing on the end of those pipes. That sounds too annoying to me. I guess if you can stand the noise and get by law enforcement, more power to you ....ya really, MORE POWER!!!!

Zero mufflers. I have straight open pipes now, so I'm used to the sound.

Didn't I read somewhere that packing the pipe with sand beforehand helps avoid kinks?

Oh, and if nobody's told you this already: work on your situps, pushups and pullups before you head off to boot camp. You'll need them... trust me.

No using the sand idea here. I'll do it right and use a proper pipe bender to get the bends symetrical so they all match. My idea is to use another set of factory headers and go back from there with the same size tubing. I'd make them plenty long and just cut them to length after I get'm all done. I want to go with two pipes on each side of the bike for a more balanced look I think.
I throw a pair of saddlebags on for longer trips once in awhile, so I'll need the pipes low enough to be out of the way for them.

then there not custom they gotta be onehundred percent yours to be completely custom and as far as symmetricality my custom eye is good enough to spot it.
