After my virago warms up and I take it for a ride as long as I'm gentle on the throttle I have no issues. But if I pin it one cylinder stops produceing power and my tach needle jumps around from no rpms to 4000 or 5000rpm. I put new plugs in both, checked the carbs and they look clean. Any suggestions would be great.

Bad plugs, wires, caps or coil or hole in the carb diaphram?

Is the tach on that bike electronic? This sounds like an electrical problem.

Had this eratic tach problem on my XJ and if the Virago is wired the same then it is the TCI. You can open it and check for cold solder joints or just buy a replacement on ebay. Here is a link for more on repairing one and how it works.

Easiest thing to do is see how she acts with a known good Ignitor. That seems to be something that the Virago's are notorious for having act-up for some reason.

I have always suspected the placement being subject to every little bump and lots of vibration. At least on the XV700N-MTSHDA.

You can do some potential problem elimination, by doing-away with the Quik-connects from the harness to the coil. Clip-off the connector and splice the ignition wires with a good, clean, solder job.

Then, find the Ground wire. Clean (fine sand) both sides of the terminal eyelet and the path it takes to Ground.
