So I was working on my bike... getting it ready to put in the new steering head bearings when my ratchet slipped in all the wd40.. took all the skin off my middle finger.. i had no knuckle left (where all the lines would be on your first knuckle closest to your fingernail).. took the skin off to the bone on about a 1"x1" patch of skin and I think broke the finger since my right middle finger is now about twice the size of my left middle finger.. and I cant move it.. if i do force myself to bend it it hurts like hell and makes a popping noise.. and i have no insurance and cant afford a doctor bill and am not gonna let this ruin my credit so i just taped it up real well and hoping mother nature will heal it unless it gets infected or something where I feel a hospital is necessary.. oh well.. just ranting... how everyone elses day going? LOL

First, clean that wound out throughly, Hydrogen Peroxide, Bentadine(?) (Iodine scrub), Physogen, any of the antiseptic cleaners will do. Rubbing alcohol will do in a pinch. Get yourself some Neosporine or similar topical antibiotic and keep the wound dressed (ban(g)daides work great). Change them often and keep the oint(k)ment on it. If the finger is broken, keep the joints immobilized. Popcicle sticks were made for this. So is aluminum backed weather stripping. Should you notice the skin turning red, hot and/or inflamed, get to the hospital, you've got an infection that topical antibiotics won't take care of. And don't worry about the bill, it would be far better to have a bill than to loose your finger (worse yet your life) because you felt you had no options. Emergency care in this country is federally mandated to take everyone, even if they cannot pay! Loss of a limb qualifies you my slippery friend, let's hope it doesn't get that far.

    Lessons learned:
    Wear gloves.
Push with an open hand in the direction of rotation when loosening or tightening fasteners.
Have a few bucks tucked away for emergencies. A credit card will do in a pinch but you should have a savings.

Take care of yourself, we hope you heal quickly!

A trip to the doctors office is a lot cheaper than a trip to the emergency room any day. Most doctors offices will set up a payment plan as well. I definately know this. I have two small girls at home. Take care of that finger, keep it clean as well as imobilized. . The popsicle trick did me well a couple of times. One thing to add though. Tape it to the finger next to it. This will help you from bumping it on anything. Hope it all turns out well.

Something you might try. Here in New Mexico, we have a few "QuikCares", to visit one, only costs $45, and they don't charge you extra for anything else they have to do. Might be worth a visit.

    Hmm.., your a mechanic.
Ok, here are the choices as I see it (and I don't want to see pictures, thanks though):
You tape the digit to an adjacent finger and get it as immobilized as you can so it can heal a little faster,
    Or...
You run it and let it take a heck of a lot longer to heal, possibly knitting incorrectly, with the attendent pain and wincing.
Your choice, but I like things to go back together right.
