Does anyone know how I match the paint for my XJ900? Other than taking a sample to the local paint shop.

Is there an easy way to identify the colour?

Its white with red and blue decals :)

    Cheers

I'm just guessing but if you can do it for a car, you should be able to do it for a bike. You can scoot down to the dealer and give them your VIN. Should be able to get you the specs. I have never purchased a bike new nor tried to color match so I've no idea if they maintain spec sheets on each machine. Hope someone can give you a definative answer.

Forget the bike shops, they won't have anything. I brought my 900 Seca to a local body shop and they matched it up perfectly with a pearl PPG paint, can't remember which one now, it was 7 years ago. If you have a DuPont dealer nearby, you can ask about ChromaVision, where they use a special camera to take a picture of your paint and then match it up to another code within their database. They have hundreds of codes already in their database, so it wouldn't hurt to ask if the 900 Seca was among them. Finally, they should also have books upon books of paint chips to match them to. It might be something entirely unrelated to a motorcycle, but you can bet somewhere in the world, some other vehicle has the exact same paint as your 900.

If you go to most autobody supply stores you can give them the year make and model of any bike/car/tractor etc, and they can tell you the colors that were available on that vehicle - I Do it for a living and Yamaha's are easy because they only offered a few colors - I matched my bikes color as well as a few of my friends, Its worth a try

I've been doing autobody and custom paint for about 4 years now (to pay for college) and I have to say that the above were my first two thoughts as well. And the last one is the "old man" factor as I like to call it. I am pretty sure every self respecting paint distribution center has one. Take in your paint, pick a brand (base coat clear coat i hope) and tell him you want a match. Mine is called Craig. He is has been doing this for longer than I have been a live, and he can match anything in a couple of days. If you have no luck w/ a code, leave a painted piece with your paint guy and give him a week to come up with something. That method has saved my ... in several sticky situations with different years of John Deere tractor restores I have worked on.

    Best of luck.

Do you have a parts fiche or know someone who does? The paint code will be in there. When you get the paint code, go to http://www.color-rite.com/ and they can get you the correct color.

I may be mistaken, but I thought that the Seca 900 only came in one color the one year it was sold here, and that was red with grey and black stripes. (?)

I know that Japarts has the colour codes posted here:
    Yamaha Paint codes

Don't know if that'll help much more finding a source though

Well that's useful for seeing what's available... but I still need to try and find a way to identify what's been used on my bike :)

    Cheers

I went to the Yamaha web site and looked up your 1983 XJ900RK. Looking at the fuel tank, it lists two colour options as SUPER RED/ STAR SILVER.

Super Red code is SUR/2U as per the Japarts info and Star Silver code is SS/6M.

I only wish I had this info last fall, I tried the paint shops colour match machine, it was close but not correct.

    MacMcMacmac,

Ah, but you are in Canada. In America it was only the red with gray and black stripes. The same with the 1982 Seca 650. In America it only came in Silver with blue and white stripes, but in Canada it was Red with black and silver stripes.

I am actually looking for the color code and/or name of that red that 1982 Seca 650's were painted in Canada. Think you could ask your local Yamaha dealer for that info?

    TIA, Phil

Rang a local paint shop and his Yamaha codes are different to the ones from the link.... most seem to start with 00

    :)

    Greetings Alive,

Can you tell if the "White" colour has metallic in it ?
If so, it could be " New Pearl White " NPW/00Y9
My 82 RJ came painted with this, and I have yet to find proof of it
in any Yamaha docs except a Sales brochure. Apparently it was only for
the Canadian ( maybe European too ? ) market.

    Regards, Wally

    Hey Wally,

Yes it has a definate pearl/metallic look.

I have found someone to paint it for me, they have access to a colour matching machine... one of those flash computer ones :)

I went to my local paint supplier with my side cover to scan for a paint match.
He came up with a 2001 Subaru DG818 White Mica Tri-Coat. It's close but.... well take a look....

    Hi Nick,

That looks really great. From the picture it looks like a very good
match. What did you think ? My bike is really a derelict and there are
NO good places to check the original lustre / metallic content etc, except
    under the emblems !
Your bike though is identical to mine. I would love to see some more
    pictures...
By the way, the picture in your signature, it looks like a white SECA
too, does it have the "Nike" swich on the tank ? I had a picture of one
once, and considered changing the stripe scheme, but I lost the pic
in a Hard-Drive crash. So I was never sure what the colours in the stripe
    were.

    Thanks for the post. !

    Wally

Thanks, it's pretty close, a bit darker however in my opinion, I may end up having to spray the plastics too. Just too cold here for any further painting.

PM your email to me and I'll see what pictures I can send you. I'm going to get cut off here soon on my picture uploads.

Here's what my tank looked like before.....
