If the petcock gets turned to prime for a second or 2 does that fuel get dumped into the crank case? Also how many quarts does an 82 XJ650 take?

You have to have several things conspiring to fill the crankcase with fuel, one being the float needles not shutting off.

The "Prime" setting on a fuel tap allows fuel to flow to the carbs even though the engine is not running and there is no vacuum to open the fuel tap in the "On" position. It is typically used after carb maintenance for a few seconds to fill the float bowls, rather than have to crank the engine over and over if it were left on the "On " setting.

Fuel will only fill the crank case if the float needles are not shutting off the fuel flow.

I am sorry but dont know the oil quantity.

Beaten by that Wizard again! Hey Wiz - it's been 25 c in Blighty today!

ok thanks guys for the info on the petcock. From the info I found on the oil looks like I just overfilled it. I was thinking it took a little over 4qts with oil and filter change (it only takes 2.8qts). I only put a little over 3 in it and it was looking good when I took off and when I got home I saw my petcock was dripping alittle. So I was scewing with it then checked my oil again it was over the sight glass and when it was running it was only half down on sight glass. So I thought i dumpped gas in the crank case. I drain aliitle oil out and smelled it. Smelled good and I only had to drain about an 1/8 of a quart out. So thanks again guys.

The 650 takes 2500CM3, which is right around 2.7 quarts. When I change I put 2.5qt in and then slowly add to the top of the sight glass (on center stand) leaving a small bubble at the top. Run the bike for a minute to circulate the oil, then let it sit 10 to 20 minutes and check again.

You should only see oil in the glass when it is on center stand, not running. On the side stand it won't show any oil. Will also not show any oil when the bike is running.

If you've been running it with 4qts of oil in it you'd probably better have a peek at the air filter; it could be oil-soaked.
