put a bit of elbow grease in and it is a runner now! Turns out the float valves were toast. I threw in some spare I had from one of my previous 400's and it purrs like a kitten. I threw in two new D8EA's put on a missing airbox side cover from some of my spare parts, tightened the slop in the chain, ditched some cheesy LED lights that were under the rear fender, and put the proper size fuel line on it instead of the vacuum line the PO had on it. Rides great, starts fine, and everything works. Not a big fan of the paint scheme but I am gonna leave it alone and just flip the bike for some $$$. It only has 2980 miles on it and it has a clear title too.

    DUDE!

You gonna be around this weekend? I might just have to shoot up and have a peek.

PM if do-able; it would make a nice morning's ride.

I forgot to add that I changed the oil in her to some fresh 15w40 too. I also replaced a few missing bolts (airbox to frame). The tank has been lined, but the petcock works flawlessly, the tank musta had some leaks on the lower corners because someone welded on some tabs on the inside and outside of the crimp lip but it isn't noticeable until you walk up close to it. The black paint hides it well. There is a couple pieces of black tape on the seat hiding a couple rips I'd guess buit they blend in well. Overall though it is a VERY nice ride.

dn't know about the cheezy lites but i think the wrap is cheezy. LOL. what's the purpose of the wrap anyways? starting to see a lot of that going around.

    nice looking bike though.

wrap encourages scavanging in the exhaust. by keeping the heat in the pipes, it speeds up the flow and increases performance of the engine.

    OK, sure.

It's a good way to make rusty pipes look good again, if you like the look.

Very nice looking XS400 - even the cute little boat tail  I especially like the rear monoshock (although it might be much harder to replace than the earlier twin rear shocks).

This thread should really be in the "Other Bikes" category.

not really, the engine is essentially a xj 4 cyl cut in half yics same dohc, etc etc,

the "real" xj400 is a 4 cyl only available in japan

Yeah, blah blah; XS400 probably has more in common with the XS650. :? That would mean that most Yamaha models that had in-line-4 engines or derivations thereof from the '80s would qualify as an XJ (Radians, Fazers, FJ11/1200s, etc.). Look at all the other XS 400 entries in "Other Bikes".
Good bike; good thread; good pictures; wrong place.

xs seca and maxim share YICS and DOHC's with the FJ/XJ's so it stays...sorry

No, the '82 XS400 Seca and Maxims are "half an XJ" motors, while the original SOHC twin-shock XS400 is the little brother to the XS650.

Radians ARE XJs (550 Maxim frame, XJ700 motor) as are the Seca II.

We've always considered the "XJ Twins" more XJ than XS. It belongs here.

And Schooter; let us not forget Igor's XJ400 special; Chile is a bit of a haul from Japan...
