pickup assembly replacement

    It looks like I'll need to replace my pickup coil assembly. I went through the ignition troubleshooting process outlined by SQL and it revealed a bad pickup coil. According to Haynes, you can't replace individual coils, you have to replace the whole assembly.

    Today, I took off the crankshaft cover to see what it looked like. The physical replacement looks easy enough, but the wires disappear into the coils themselves. It looks like I'll have to splice the leads.

    Has anybody done this before? Is there another way? Anything else I need to watch out for? A How-to floating around?

    If you are replacing the whole assembly, it willl come tails & all.

    The one other thing to check, just in case, is whether it's possible that the pickup harness was pinched or otherwise damaged somwhere... maybe you just have a broken harness wire and not a bad pickup.

    FWIW, individual pickup coils can be replaced, if you happen to get a single one from a junk set, for instance... it just requires soldering and some heat shrink tubing for the connections.

    Good point. I know the bike has been dropped at least once, and it looks like somebody might have fixed that cover with JB weld or something. Maybe it damaged something inside.

    Is the single coil replacement self-explanatory? Do you have to crack open the coils, or is the wiring on the outside?

    The coils will come as a unit with the wire attached. I believe it runs clear to the TCI.

    Single-coil replacement is accomplished by cutting the wires (far enough from the pickup to give you a bit of length to work with), then soldering and heat-shrink insulating the splices for the replacement pickup.

    You don't have to go to great lengths to replace Ignition Pick-up's.

    The Pick-up Assembly used on our Bikes is the same unit that got used on a Boat-load of other Bikes, too.

    Check-out Ebay, Salvage Yards nearby and Online and see what you can find for yourself.

    Compare the Part Numbers for what you find and what you have and need by checking if the match on the Yamaha Parts Web Site.

    FWIW;

    When I had a mystery issue last month, I bought all the ignition pieces since I hadn't taken the time to troubleshoot beforehand. The thought was that when I had time to work on it, I could test and replace as necessary....costs a bit extra to buy parts I didn't need but saved me time. I think I paid $22 for a set of pickups which included all the wiring back to the TCI as Carl mentioned. On the turbo, all the wiring is exposed but a difficult and convoluted path to the TCI....I was concerned that I ight have to remove the starter and/or alternator but not to worry, the wire can be replaced it situ.
