Tested my pickup coils today, meter set to 2k, both pickup tested at 119 ohms but gives good spark, does this mean they're toast? i tested with the Pickup coils disconnected to the TCI, orange to black and gray to black. this is for a 1981 xj650 non-yics.

That's not low, that's high. The primary side should be 2.5 Ohms.

I thought the spec for our pickup coils are supposed to be 560-840 ohms?

Sorry. Missed the "pickup" part there. Yes, for the pickup coils, they should be 700Ohms +/- 20%.

Something weird is certainly going on, though. Are you reading resistance from any of those three wires to the block? If they're disconnected from the TCI, then all three wires should be open when measured from the block/chassis. If one of your pickups is shorting to ground, that might explain the reading you're seeing. That, or somebody installed some pickups from a different bike. Posting a photo might help.

wouldn't be surprised if it's from another bike, the TCI itself that the PO installed is from an FZ400! alright, i'm out right now but i'll take pics when i get back. how di i measure to check if it's open? fairly new to this and using a multimeter.

here are the photos, both measure at around 120 ohms, multimeter set to 2k. initially, i thought i had a pickup coil failure because 2 and 3 were not firing i followed your guide and swapped out the orange and gray wire and the spark transferred from 1 and 4 to 2 and 3, i then found out that the TCI the previous owner put was for an FZ400.
