    Hi guys,

    Sorry to jump in BUT......

As of recently my bike has not started due to some sort of issue. I have changed out the battery, solenoid, checked all wires, and cleaned my starter brushes.

For the life of me I could not convince myself to buy an electronic reader and finally did today to check out the specs on the other hard to read issues. My pickup coils read a healthy and juicy reading but when i went to test the pickup coils they showed me less than positive reads (DRUMROLLS).

While grounded to the black the reading on the orange read 625 but my grey cable read nothing. I would suspect that the cable has been shot since I can clearly see it is directly connected to the pickup coil.

PS, the bike does start and gives off a single cough when starting but dies off. I cleaned out the exhaust per rusteegolds advice and nothing came out of the exhaust so that clears up anything on that end.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I would think that if there is a spark your pick-up coils are ok.
Any time I have problems with my bike being hard to start the carbs need to be cleaned and or sealed.

if one pick up is bad you need to replace it or the set.
    XJ550 models:
    Pick-up coils:
    650 ohms +/- 20% = 520 ohms to 780 ohms acceptable range

The grey wire casing might be good but if it has been pinched the actual wire inside may be broken. Is it possible to replace the wire?

As XJ55H pointed out it is sealed but just before it disappeared into pickup use point of meter probe to push into grey wire and see if you get a reading

    FIXED!!!

So as it turns out when installing my new pegs and removing the peg body that bolts into the frame i accidentally pinched the pickup coil cables. They slipped behind the larger nut and where squeezed until they cut out. So the new pickup coil gave me new cables and allow the bike to puuuurrrrr.

So now I have a bunch of new electrical pieces on my bike and shouldn't worry about anything for the next few months!
