Can anyone here recommend a place to find a piston ring compressor that will fit our pistons, I've looked in town and I am not having much luck. As usual the internet doesn't offer up a whole lot of alternatives.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Massimo

    We have them.......... :D

HCP9771 Aftermarket piston ring COMPRESSOR TOOL. Wide-band ring compressor tool has a quick-release handle and allows you to prevent damage to the rings when installing the cylinder jugs down over the pistons. You'll need to use two (2) per engine. Fits all XJ-series engines.

I honestly couldn't begin to count how many engines I've built over the years....not bragging, just that it's been so many I really don't have any idea how many.....and I've never used a ring compressor.....not that it wouldn't have made life easier but I just never had the need to buy one....the toughest has been a mult block where you get one piston started and have another on the same plane....you just do them one-two, then you go to the next.

Remember, all cylinders are camfered or tapered at the bottom to facilitate the installation....with a little guidance, even 3 ringers slide right in.

I realize it's kind of late to be writing to this thread, but I was wondering, Could a rubber mallet be used to tap the cylinder block down over the pistons? I theory it should work; I just wanted to know if anybody ever tried to do it that way.

I did mine for the first time, twice actually as I had to take the cyls off again, but that is besides the point. Did not need ring compressors, I basically did 2 at a time as was previously mentioned. I do have a tip, get one side 'down' (Like the #1 cyl for instance) a bit and just start the head bolts so that it will not lift up again and release the rings of that piston. Then you can work from the other side of the motor without it lifting and causing frustration. Take your time, light tapping only...things will go in when lined up properly....keeping the pistons straight is tricky at times and you will have to sometimes push the rings closer to the piston by hand. I give the pistons light taps from the top to keep them centered...have 'fun' and don't be in a hurry.
