No, it's not an XJ. However, it has CV carbs, probably about a 36mm size.

The subject is a 1977 GS400X, parallel twin. This thing came to me with rusted out mufflers and a pretty beat up airbox with much of it missing. When I took apart the remains of the airbox, I found that the rubber connectors had turned down velocity stacks protruding into it. If I took the box off, but put the stacks on the carbs, the bike ran.

So, I acquired a pair of foam pod filters and built my own stacks from some plumbing parts.

The inside of the intake is a 1 1/4 inch tube, approximately 3 inches long. It runs like this:

I'll find out how it pulls when I get the new chain. The chain is so rusty, it's lumpy.

I'm a little confused. Saw your contributions to the FJowners group. Going from an FJ to a twin 400? Give you credit for your love of two-wheeling.

Oh, the FJ isn't going anywhere. Rode it to work today. The GS is a near-free project, I'm just poking at it for fun.

Small bikes are their own special thing.

I don't mean to revive a dead thread, but seeing as how there are only 3 threads in the "other motorcycles" forum that have had comments in the last 2 weeks, I figured nobody would care that much.

There's no problem with downsizing at all. I went from an XJ 700 to a twin 400 Kawasaki. It's a great little bike. Reason why I got it was that I wanted a bike that wasn't going to potentially get me into a whole lotta trouble as my daily....and something that got a little better than 35 mpg for city commute....plus the 700 is just a big freaking bike for city use. I'm still keeping it for travel reasons and, of course, the fun factor of having a rocket.
