    hi all,
i've bought pods for my xj550 and i've just removed the stock airbox (cutted in two...).
i've also bought a stage 1-3 dynojet kit for the bike.
my bike mounts 2 old aftermarket silencers (Busso).

i've some doubts and problem with the dynojet kit instructions and i'd like to know yuor opinion..

    FIRST DOUBT

as written in the box of the kit "stage 1" is "for midly tuned machines using the stock airbox, with stock or k&n filter #ya-1600" and "stage 3" is "for midly tuned machines using individual filters or velocity stacks"
    BUT
stage 1 and stage 3 instructions are the same (comparing word by word), as you can see here:

    and here:

    so which is the difference??

    SECOND DOUBT
you can read above: "use the dj-144 main jets with stock exhaust, or use the dj-140 main jets with free flowing aftermarket exhaust"

is it right to use a bigger jet size with a less flowing exhaust?
i thought it was the opposite..

please help me on this cause on friday i would like to put my bike on the road :)

i'm very cared about this mod... i think i'll mount the dj144 jets, what do you think?

again, sorry for my english and thank you in advance,
    mbertazz

I'd say that's a mis-print on the jet sizes - 144 should be the bigger of the two.

I had a look at the Dynojet website at some other kits and they typically come with about 4 different jet sizes to cater for stages 1 and 3. Have you checked the kit to see if there are more jets in there??

Anyway, the only difference between the two stages (in other kits) appears to be the main jet size - so if you only have the 2 jets, go with the larger ones.

It doesn't really matter what the directions say to use since you still have to determine the correct jet size by trial and error or running it on a dyno anyway. The kit is not likely to have the size you need unless everything on the bike is stock because it is different for every bike depending on the exhaust and air filters you have. Remember that the main jets will only make a difference at full throttle so they won't even come into play unless you do a lot of drag racing but that will ruin 2nd gear so don't do it. Also, you will need to change the pilot jets and if they don't come with the kit then the kit is just a waste of money. It's better to buy the jets you need and forget about the kit.

In my experience it's best to avoid those jet kits and just shim the stock needles and use Mikuni jets.

Like ArizonaSteve said, it's all trial and error.

As a starting point, I'd go up two sizes on the pilot jet, add a shim to the needles, and go up three or four sizes on the main jets.

When I installed pod filters and Supertrapp 4-1 exhaust I had to go up a size on the jets but drop the needle a notch because it was too rich in the midrange. A jet kit might work for someone who has a completely stock bike with the factory exhaust system and air filters but isn't very useful otherwise since they don't include pilot jets and isn't likely to have the right size main jets that you will need.

    thank you for your suggestions men;

i have to be very lucky cause my carbs seems perfect at first try (144 on main jet, new needle, no drill slide lift holes)!
the sound is fantastic and i love how it with pods.

you can see a small movie here:
