Here is a flywheel from a Polaris 425 ATV. It is a easy fix to replace it, but my question to you is why did this happen? Has anyone seen this one before? You can see the magnet can loose in the flywheel and tore up the stator and flywheel. I have been working on bikes and ATV's for years and have never seen this one before. I like to know the reasons for a failure , it sometimes indicates other problems.

I'll have to post the pics tonight. They are in a bmp format and won't upload. Any how if you can visualize the flywheel, magnets are glued to the inside for the alternator/generator. One of the magnets has come loose and chewed everything up. Bits of ground magnet everywhere. Any body got a idea of why this happens?

without seeing the pic i can tell you i see it all the time on the race machines, i think the rpms make the crank and other parts dance in funny directions, making the stator/flywheel occasionally "kiss". also i see it happen when somebody puts an aftermarket "better" stator in, especially from Ricky Stator. they tend to be a bit tighter and larger all around, and tear the flywheel apart.

another thing to check is the crank bearings. a little play goes a long way at 7000+ rpms

Finally got my pics , what do you think. Is this a indication of something else going wrong?

looks like it shorted out some how, maybe when the magnet came loose.

The story I got from him was he was riding it then shut off the engine. When he went to restart the motor was locked up. It looks like the magnet came loose after it was shut off, I cant see any dammage to the coils though.

I have seen this often on Kohler engines that were left out in the elements. Those magnets are actually fastened with epoxy forming a mechanical bond. As the steel flywheel corrodes, it lifts the magnets loose and they whack the stator.

That would make sense, this bike was left outside for a number of years. I'm hoping we can replace the flywheel and everything will be OK.
