porting

    im porting an fz600 head (same as the xj600?) and would like to know what else i should change out per maintenance or just should have done while the head is off. and has anyone else had any luck with porting these pros cons maybe

    porting & polishing intake and exhaust is supposed to increase performance, head off valve guide seals would be a good idea.
    you could have the valves check out re done, there is a method of cutting and lapping (forget the name) that is supposed to be better.
    it comes down to money and expectations of results
    are you having it done or doing it your self?
    you could balance the heads too.

    i know that back in the day, hotrod guys found that sometimes even though it looked good, it was worse

    i am doing it myself and right now i have just rounded out the casting marks and the lips left from pressing in the valve seal

    valve seals are rubber. valve guides maybe.

    ya the ones that actually make a seal with the valve for the combustion chamber

    Please take a picture. The valve seat should not be messed with. Since you're horrible with names we'd like to see exactly what it is you're doing.

    you can see the cast mmark in the middle and and they put in the valve seat then drilled it out but left big lips on the inside from where they stopped machining

    Ya. Those "big lips" are supposed to be there. They help hold the valve seats in place. You can surface poilsh them, but I recommend against removing any material from that area.
