When I crank the engine over it drains the battery fairly quick, It cranks and cranks , when I let off the starter button it fires. But if it doesn´t start right away it drains the battery. Do you think the starter is draw to much current?

Are you still running the stock fuse box?

The ignitor on the XJ does not like to work if the voltage is low.

Your voltage is too low when cranking, then when you let off the button the voltage comes up and the ignitor works.

A good battery just barely gets the job done. Any weakness in the battery and you're push starting. Have the battery load tested. Also check for dirty/loose electrical connections.

Then once it starts check to make sure the charging system is up to snuff. TIP: The battery will discharge at idle, charging doesn't start until 2000RPM.

You don't. You have a weak battery or a wiring issue; the giveaway is the attempt to fire as soon as the button is released.

What's happening is just what Carl is talking about. Your battery is strong enough to spin the motor, but that's it; there's no "juice" left to fire the ignition. As soon as you release the starter button, the ignition system DOES fire but then the motor isn't spinning.

Fully charge the battery, install NEW spark plugs. Drain the float bowls of the gas that sat in them since the last time it ran. Betcha with fresh gas, new plugs and a nice bright battery it fires right up.
