So do I, hence the desire to import one. Haven't even thought about how to go about it. Going to google a bit, but figured I would ask here, too.

Honestly the best thing you could do, is call your DMV and ask them what's involved with importing a motorcycle from UK.

It won't be a "local DMV" issue; it will be the Feds. EPA. DOT.

It's too new. If it were an older bike, you could just ship it here as an "antique" and quietly license it in a state like Michigan where they don't look twice.

But that's a brand new bike; and it probably DOESN'T meet USA emissions and safety standards for current year models. You would probably never get it off the dock.

Get somebody to crate you a nice 2005 model and just ship it here; claim it's for "off road use" only and then license it anyway.

The '05 still had dual pipes...

You need a "Qualified" Gray Market Agent.

You must be willing to lie and pay bribes.
You could win-up with a Euro-Bike in your driveway, ... or losing everything you paid and getting fined or jailed if caught.

It was a LOT easier, ... 20 years ago.

But, if you found an Agent willing to play ball and was able to buy a New 1300 ... Keep it for 3 weeks ... accumulate 1250 Miles on it ... and, then "Sell YOU a USED Bike" ... you'd only need to find someone willing to prep the Bike for shipping, get it in a Shipping Crate, ... and have a Moving Company pick-up the Crate and load it into a Container headed to the Good Ole U. S. of A.

    Then, you wait.
    Then, ... it gets here.

Then, you, several Benjamin Franklin's, a few Ulysses S. Grant's and a whole crew of Andrew Jackson's go down to the Custom's Office and start doing the paperwork.
Bring some small Birthday Cards in Envelopes with the Stamps already on the Envelopes.

When thing start looking like they might get bogged-down in Red Tape ... ask to borrow the Stapler ... Staple a couple of 20's together, ... then ask the guy:

    "Is today your Birthday"?
"I want to send somebody a Birthday Card."
"Gimme that stapler, again. Maybe it ain't your Birthday; maybe it's somebody else's Birthday.
Who should we send a card too?"

Then, hum ... Happy Birthday To You!

I would be willing to strip one of these to it's smallest component parts & ship it to the USA as second hand spares, if anyone wants to fund it.

The '05 looks like it still has carburetors, but it *is* sexy.

Rick - I hope all that customs mess is magically not the case in FL. I mean, I could always go to miami, and say it is "coffee beans". I mean.. they get truckloads of "coffee beans" from Colombia, right? haha

I do have some contacts in the UK.

Heres a separate question.. Suppose I buy it while I am in japan (3 months of work over there).. if they sell it there. Gotta look into this.
Put my own mileage on it.
    What then?

GuyStJames - YICS was done away with. But aside from that, you're kind-of right. That is what makes me want it. (Ntm the bhp and torque specs...)

YES, it's a "new" XJ, and yes the '05 still had carbs I do believe, all the more reasons for me to want one. That and the more recent ones have a 4-1 with a HONKIN HUGE muffler. I like the symmetry of dual pipes.

If you bought one in Japan and rode it for a couple of months, I believe you would then be allowed to import it (as Rick alluded to) without issue.

Unfortunately, I don't think they sell that fire-breathing monster in Japan. Australia's not far away though, is it?

I think I would sell my house to get ahold of the 05'. It's like the best of the Maxim and the Seca with a needle full of steroids. I think I am in love

Lol, they sell those here, though.

Maybe we're thinking about this the wrong way.. Maybe I get an '05 sent to me as.. a 'coffee table' or something... and just slap the VIN from a legal bike on it. Problem solved.

    Its "custom", officer.
