What part normally disintegrates when they fail from being fragile due to age & wear ? Is it #7 - the primary chain guide or #10 or #11 - the dampers ? or a combination of all 3 parts ?

Just curious.... pic is from '82 XJ750J Maxim Parts Catalogue.....

so what you are saying then is ...it is the starter clutch upper guide that disintegrates ........& nothing to do with the parts that I mentioned above..... ????

    Interesting.....

your first picture is the cam chain guide/tensioner, that's not what guys find in the shift drum. i've never replaced those, probably wouldn't be a bad idea though.
that #23 is what gives the problems, replaced a few of those. heat, oil and time take their toll on them. and yes it's a case splitter job.

Think of it this way: You'll only have to do the job once (unless you are lucky enough to still be riding in 2045).

You might be. Malcom Smith is still an active racer (though not as active as he once was) at 74, and his father was still a Marine drill instructor into his 90's.

You'll just be riding sloooowly... the turn signal self canceling function will save you from Eternal Blinker Syndrome, a condition brought on by driving when aged!

Is this where the Primary chain is located?
Or is this run off the crank ?
So where is the oil nozzle that wears out from rubbing on the chain?
What wears out and allows the oil nozzle to wear down?
Sorry, not as knowledgable as the wizards here.

Part 23 in the 2nd diagram above disintegrates and chunks migrate all over your crank case. This causes the chain to flop about and wear on an oil nozzle not shown in the diagram. There is no true primary chain on these bikes... that chain is a... its a... umm.. it's 1 am and I remember nothing right now! Sorry. I give up. Hope somebody useful can help.

Well, we have a DYI section, but hardly anyone ever looks there. Unfortunately a lot of the good threads get pushed bak when newbies post in there asking for help, instead of making threads about how to do things.
