So my bike (1982 xj550 maxim) runs great. Starts up every time and was going just fine until recently. The bike will run and I can rev it up and everything fine but when I put it in gear it goes and stops and goes and stops and it feels like the chain is way loose when accelerating. So I check the chain. Its fine. I take off the cover over the small sprocket and put the bike on its stand. The sprocket will run and just randomely stop and then grab again. I opened the place where you put in the oil and could hear some noise. What could the problem be? Transmission, Clutch, Chain?

The weather is great and I am really missing my bike right now. Thanks for any help.

    Clutch.
There's a number of reasons why it would behave like that.

    Broken Pressure Plate fasteners.
    Completely worn-out Friction Discs.
    Warped Drive Discs
Scored Drive Discs with worn Friction Discs.

You need to pull the Clutch Cover and begin dismantling the Clutch.
After you get the last Disc out of the Basket ... rotate the Basket and Cage and make sure BOTH are tight and lined-up and not loose.
